Manchester City 5-0 Arsenal
In the big opening contest, defending champions Manchester City was up against Arsenal at home. While the champs were the favourites going ahead, it turned out to be utter one-sided destruction, with the hosts hammering five past the visitor, thanks to goals from Ilkay Gündogan (7), Ferran Torres (12 and 84), Gabriel Jesus (43) and Rodri (53). Furthermore, Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka was shown a red card in the 35th minute, making things easier for City.

Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea
In the second blockbuster clash of the day, Liverpool hosted the European champion, Chelsea. It was expected to be a close encounter, and no one was the clear favourite here. Courtesy of the resulting penalty, Mohamed Salah drew level to keep the deadlock at half-time. In the second half, Chelsea showed remarkable resilience and composure with its defence, not allowing The Reds to penetrate and eventually keep it levelled and settle for a draw.
