UEFA Champions League 2021/22 Season | Matchday 5 Roundup

The UEFA Champions League resumed this week and the excitement was high as ever with the top clubs in Europe fighting to win the continental competition.

Man City 2-1 PSG

Man City secured a first-place finish in their Champions League group after coming from behind to beat Paris St-Germain 2-1 thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus. The Premier League champions produced a superb response after falling behind to a goal from Kylian Mbappe against the run of play early in the second half at the Etihad Stadium. Sterling levelled just after the hour and substitute Jesus popped up to claim a winner 14 minutes from time that also confirmed City as winners of Group A.

Liverpool 2-0 Porto

Goals from Thiago and Mohamed Salah guided Liverpool to a 2-0 victory over Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Thiago’s sweetly-struck low half-volley early in the second half was worthy of winning any game and the fact it came in a dead-rubber having already qualified for the last 16 should not diminish the quality of the goal. Salah scored for the fourth time in three meetings against this opposition to take his personal Champions League tally to 32 with Steven Gerrard’s European record of 41 well within his sights.

Thibaut Courtois: ‘It was a very complete performance’

Real Madrid booked their place in the next round with a win over Sheriff Tiraspol away from home.

Sheriff 0-3 Real Madrid

David Alaba and Toni Kroos put Madrid two goals ahead at the break, and Benzema added a third before the hour mark to seal his side’s place in the knockout stages with a game to spare in Group D. Madrid will seal top spot in Group D with a point against Inter in a fortnight, while Sheriff take on Shakhtar Donetsk knowing their place in the Europa League has already been secured.
