Five Things You May Not Know About Jules Koundé, FC Barcelona’s Latest Defensive Addition

Jules Koundé is new FC Barcelona player. The 23-year-old Frenchman is one of the most promising defenders in the world and a regular for the French national team. With his physical strength and the quality he possesses when it comes to playing the ball, he fulfils the Camp Nou club’s preferred profile for centre-backs, plus he can also play as a right-back.

During his time at Sevilla FC, who he joined in the 2019/20 season, Koundé hasn’t gone unnoticed, asserting himself as one of the best defenders of the present and future in LaLiga Santander. Here are five things you may not already know about him:

A late bloomer

The man who is currently tipped to be one of the best defenders in the world over the next decade wasn’t always tipped for the tpop. It was not until 2013 – at the age of 13 – that he began turning out in the youth ranks of a professional club, Girondins de Bordeaux, but his introverted nature prevented him from standing out in spite of his talent. Nevertheless, the breakthrough came and the door opened in 2015 when he was called up to the first team, even though he had not yet reached the age of 18. And the rest is history.

Behind the scenes: Kounde’s first day at Barça

Jules Kounde enjoyed his first day as a Barça player. From the pitch to the locker room through the meeting with the president Joan Laporta, amazing first day to Jules.

A full-back turned central defender

During his first steps as a professional, Koundé played on the right side of the back line. Standing 1.78m tall, he was not considered a suitable centre-back, but to cover for an injury, the then Bordeaux coach Gustavo Poyet, asked him to play at centre-back. A great performance was enough to establish himself as the great player he is today, not forgetting his versatility as a full-back, where he has played for both Sevilla FC and the French national team.

Koundé-Tchouaméni: From friends to foes

An interesting story involving the two main players in two of the most talked-about moves made in the summer transfer window. Jules Koundé and Aurélien Tchouaméni crossed paths in the youth ranks at Bordeaux, and since then they have developed a friendship that continues to this day. Such is the bond that the players have, they spent their holidays together, and Tchouaméni is even an ambassador for Koundé’s clothing brand. Now, although they share a dressing room with the French national team, they will go head-to-head in ElClásico in LaLiga Santander.

The Sevilla FC No.12 endorsed by Kanouté

Frederic Kanouté is a legend at Sevilla FC. The Mali striker will always be fondly remembered by Sevilla FC fans thanks to his goals, which were instrumental in winning several titles. His No.12 shirt is an institution at Nervión, and it was Jules Koundé who wore the No.12 shirt throughout his time there. “Even though it’s in defence, the No.12 is in good hands,” said Frederic on his Twitter account, highlighting the high level of French centre-back.

A diehard NBA… and Iverson fan

Jules is a huge basketball fan. During his holidays, he took the opportunity to travel to the United States to enjoy the NBA live, and even showed off his ability with a basketball on his social media channels. In an interview with Sevilla FC, he revealed the one player he admires above all others. “I have a model I usually copy. Who is my favourite player? Allen Iverson,” he replied when asked about his extravagant hairstyles.
