The English Premier League (EPL) league table continues to get intense with each passing matchday. This past weekend produced some interesting results.
Newcastle 4-0 Aston Villa
Callum Wilson’s double, a Joelinton strike and Miguel Almiron’s curling effort give Newcastle a deserved 4-0 win over sorry Aston Villa. The visitors gave as good as they got in a stop-start opening period including 10 minutes of added time, before Ashley Young’s handball late on gave Callum Wilson the chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot, and he duly obliged. The second half proved as contrasting as they come with Newcastle scintillating and Villa calamitous. A training-ground move from a corner saw Wilson nod in a second before Joelinton added a third three minutes later to end the game as a contest. Miguel Almiron continued his sparkling form with a wonderful curling effort from 25 yards to add a real shine to a comprehensive home win.
Brighton 4-1 Chelsea
A Leandro Trossard effort, alongside own goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah in the first half, and a late Pascal Gross goal helped secure Roberto De Zerbi his first win as Brighton & Hove Albion manager and bring Graham Potter’s unbeaten start as manager to an end in a 4-1 win at the Amex. The win moves Brighton up into seventh in the Premier League with Chelsea staying fifth. The Seagulls overwhelmed Chelsea with energy in the first half but they also showed the weaknesses in Graham Potter’s usual set-up. They exploited the space in behind the Blues’ wing-backs by first passing into midfield before moving the ball out wide. Time and again it resulted in dangerous attacks.
Liverpool 1-2 Leeds United
Liverpool were beaten 2-1 by Leeds United at Anfield in the Premier League. Jesse Marsch’s side were ahead after just four minutes after a huge error from Joe Gomez. Mohamed Salah would level matters after 14 minutes but Crysencio Summerville would strike with minutes of the game remaining to condemn Liverpool to defeat. The loss leaves Liverpool in ninth and Leeds move up to 15th. Although Liverpool were below par, they still would have run out winners if Leeds’ goalkeeper was not in fine form. He was fast off his line whenever Liverpool played the ball behind the visitor’s defence and made nine saves in all. He denied Salah and Darwin Nunez a number of times and the Uruguayan in particular will have cursed the stopper as he continually thwarted him.
